The American Academy of Ophthalmic Professionals™ (AAOP™) is the Academy’s home for technicians, scribes and other clinical team members. As a membership organization, AAOP supports the exceptional delivery of physician-led patient care through education, training and career development.

ATPO Is Now the American Academy of Ophthalmic Professionals (AAOP)

Since 1972, the Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO) and its members have represented a diverse group of allied health professionals. The Academy is excited to welcome current ATPO members to the new AAOP membership group as a key pillar of the Academy’s commitment to supporting the entire eye care team. Established ATPO members pay no additional dues in 2023 and remain part of the professional network that represents the interests of clinical teams. AAOP members enjoy expanded opportunities for career advancement and access to the most up-to-date information in the field. Read more about this transition in EyeNet.

    Who Can Join AAOP?

AAOP membership is open to ophthalmic clinical personnel (ophthalmic assistants, technicians, technologists, surgical and keratorefractive techs, photographers, nurses, and orthoptists) employed by a current paid ophthalmologist member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Optometrists and commercial representatives are not eligible for AAOP membership. Learn more about the benefits of AAOP Membership.
